Powerpoles
Anderson Powerpoles are a brand of electrical connectors made by Anderson Power Products (although clones are widely available). They are genderless, modular, multi-way DC power connectors widely used in electronics, telecommunications, and especially Amateur (Ham) Radio.
The most common variant used in ham radio is the PP15/PP30/PP45 series (rated for 15A, 30A, and 45A respectively), which all share the same housing size and are therefore interchangeable and stackable.
Physical Characteristics
- Genderless design: Both sides of a connection use identical connectors — there is no "male" or "female" plug. This means any two connectors can mate with each other.
- Modular/stackable: Individual connector housings can be snapped together side-by-side to create multi-pole connectors.
- Color-coded contacts: The contacts (terminals) come in different current ratings and are color-coded for easy identification.
- Self-latching: The housings click together and hold firmly without requiring tools to disconnect.
- Compact and robust: Designed for repeated connect/disconnect cycles in field conditions.
The ARRL/Anderson Standard Configuration
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) have standardized a specific orientation for Powerpole connectors used in ham radio:
- Red housing = Positive (+)
- Black housing = Negative (−)
- When viewed from the front (mating face):
- Red connector is on the top-right
- Black connector is on the top-left
- The metal contacts face upward
This standardization (sometimes called the "ARRL standard" or "West Mountain Radio standard") ensures that any two ham radio operators can connect their equipment together without risk of reverse polarity — critical in emergency communications situations.
Common Uses in Amateur Radio
- Power distribution: Connecting radios, amplifiers, and accessories to a 12V DC power supply or battery. A single supply can feed multiple devices via a Powerpole distribution block (e.g., RigRunner by West Mountain Radio).
- Emergency/portable operations: During field events like ARRL Field Day, SOTA (Summits on the Air), or EMCOMM (Emergency Communications) deployments, Powerpoles allow rapid, reliable connection of equipment in the field.
- Go-kits: Amateur radio "go-kits" (portable emergency radio kits) almost universally use Powerpoles for all DC wiring, ensuring any piece of equipment can be quickly swapped in or out.
- Vehicle installations: Mobile radio installations in vehicles use Powerpoles to connect transceivers and accessories to the vehicle's 12V system.
- Battery packs: Portable battery packs (LiFePO4, SLA, etc.) are commonly fitted with Powerpole connectors for use with portable radios.
- Charging: Many ham radio battery chargers use Powerpole connectors, allowing direct connection to a Powerpole-equipped battery without adapters.
